Why it mattersOriginal data and self-contained passages are the strongest, most repeatable citation levers you control.

01

Definition & Foundation

What it is, in plain words

Engines cite passages, not pages. Once the retrieval mechanics of Pillar 2 are clear, the work becomes a writing craft: composing claims that survive extraction out of context. The retrievable unit is the self-contained passage: a block of roughly 134–167 words that answers one question on its own, without needing the three paragraphs above it. If a sentence only makes sense in context, it cannot be lifted into an answer, and an answer is the only place a citation lives.

Citability is that discipline made repeatable. Front-load the answer (AI retrieval weights opening content heavily, so the direct answer belongs in roughly the first 200 words); write one claim per passage; choose formats engines quote disproportionately; express authority as signals a machine can parse; and publish original data nobody can synthesize away. The Princeton GEO study measured the payoff directly: adding statistics, quotations, and cited sources lifted generative visibility by up to 40%. This pillar turns that finding into seven concrete levers.

02

The Seven Levers of Citability

Each is its own deep dive; this page is the trailhead

the unit

Passage optimization

Write claim-first, context-independent passages that answer one question even when ripped from the page. The foundational craft everything else builds on; start here: Passage Optimization.

the shape

Answer-first structure

Question-shaped heading, a direct one-sentence answer, then the detail. The inverted pyramid, now machine-readable; the opening sentences are what get lifted. See Answer-First Structure.

the multiplier

Extractable formats

Definitions, step lists, comparison tables, and statistics are quoted far more than prose. Structure is a citation multiplier; see Extractable Formats.

the trust layer

E-E-A-T for machines

Experience, expertise, authority, and trust expressed as parseable signals: named authors, citations, recognized entities, original evidence. Authority is computed, not claimed; see E-E-A-T for Machines.

the moat

Original data & research

Proprietary statistics are the one asset an engine cannot get anywhere else, the #1 predictor of citation across every major engine. The highest-leverage lever in the pillar: Original Data & Research.

the commercial edge

Comparison & "best" content

"X vs Y" and "best X for Y" prompts are where AI answers meet buying decisions, and engines assemble them from comparison-shaped content. See Comparison & "Best" Content.

the maintenance

Freshness & cadence

Recency is a live retrieval signal: roughly 44% of AI Overview citations come from content under a year old. Citations decay unless maintained: Freshness & Cadence.

03

How to Use This Pillar

A build order, not a checklist

The seven levers compound, but they have a natural sequence: get the unit and the shape right before you chase the multipliers, and treat original data as the destination, not the first stop.

The citability build order

1

Fix the unit and the shape first

Start with Passage Optimization and Answer-First Structure. A page that isn't written in self-contained, answer-first passages can't be helped by any of the later levers; there's no liftable unit for them to improve.

2

Add the multipliers

Layer in Extractable Formats (turn prose into definitions, lists, tables, stats) and E-E-A-T for Machines (named authors, entities, evidence). These stack on top of well-structured passages; they can't rescue badly-structured ones.

3

Invest in the moat

Then commit to Original Data & Research, the single most durable citation asset you can own, because it compounds as others cite you. This is where a mature GEO program spends its scarcest hours.

4

Win the commercial queries, then maintain

Apply the craft to Comparison & "Best" Content where citations meet revenue, and wire Freshness & Cadence into your operating rhythm so the citations you win don't quietly decay.
