Definition & Foundation
What it is, in plain words
GEO went from science project to daily reality in under four years, and knowing the sequence inoculates you against two equally wrong takes: "GEO is brand new, nobody understands it" and "it's just SEO with a new logo." The timeline below is the whole arc: from ChatGPT's launch to answer engines that complete tasks and carry ads.
The reason GEO practice still runs ahead of its evidence base is simple: the surfaces change faster than anyone can run a clean study. That is also why this page earns its place: a team that can see the current moment as one point on a known curve reacts to trends; everyone else reacts to headlines. Keep the timeline updated and it stays the cheapest risk management you own.
The Timeline
Every milestone that changed the game, in order
ChatGPT launches
OpenAI's chatbot reaches an estimated 100 million users in about two months, the fastest-adopted consumer app to that point. "Ask the model" becomes normal behavior, and every search team takes notice.
Bing bolts an LLM onto search
Microsoft ships GPT-4-powered Bing Chat (later Copilot), the first mainstream search engine answering in synthesized prose with citations. The retrieve-and-cite pattern goes public.
Google previews SGE
The Search Generative Experience appears at Google I/O as an opt-in Labs experiment: AI-written answers stacked above the classic ten blue links.
Princeton names the field
The paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" (published at KDD 2024) runs the field's first controlled experiments and finds that adding statistics, quotations, and citations lifts generative visibility by up to 40%.
AI Overviews go live
SGE graduates into AI Overviews for US users, then globally. AI answers move from experiment to the default search page, at Google scale.
ChatGPT gets real-time search
ChatGPT Search ships with live web retrieval and citations, turning the world's biggest chatbot into a genuine answer engine, and Bing's index into a retrieval source worth feeding.
AI Mode launches
At I/O, Google ships AI Mode, a dedicated conversational search tab with multi-turn follow-ups. Search stops being a list you scan and becomes a dialogue you continue.
Citations decouple from rankings
Ahrefs measures the share of AI Overview citations coming from top-10 pages falling from ~76% to ~38% in eight months: partly better detection, largely query fan-out. Ranking stops being a proxy for AI visibility.
Agentic commerce arrives
Google debuts the Universal Commerce Protocol at NRF with 20+ launch partners: Shopify, Walmart, Target, Best Buy among them. Assistants begin transacting, not just recommending. See Agentic Commerce Protocols.
AI Mode hits a billion users, and gets ads
Google says AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users with query volume doubling each quarter, and announces ads inside AI Mode at Google Marketing Live. Monetization is the surest sign a surface is permanent.
The standards race opens
Google Cloud publishes the Open Knowledge Format v0.1, the first vendor-backed standard for machine-readable site knowledge, landing alongside llms.txt and NLWeb in the standards race.
Putting It to Work
Turn history into a habit
The past is fixed; the habit is what you implement. Build a lightweight routine for tracking how the surfaces evolve, so your team reacts to the trend line instead of to each individual headline.
The stay-oriented playbook
Keep a one-page timeline
Maintain a living doc of major GEO milestones, most recent at the top; start by copying the one above. It takes minutes to update and gives every new hire the whole arc at a glance.
Separate principles from tactics
As you log each change, ask: does this alter a durable principle (be retrievable, be citable) or just a tactic (this specific markup)? Principles get built into process; tactics get a lighter touch.
Assign a "surface watcher"
One person skims a short list of trusted sources weekly and posts anything material to the team. Distributed FOMO scanning is worse than one focused pass.
React to the trend, not the tweet
When a dramatic claim circulates, check it against the timeline. A single volatile week rarely justifies rebuilding your strategy; a sustained shift across months does.
