Why Search Changed
LLMs collapsed "search → read → decide" into a single generated answer, gutting the click economy that funded the web.
Why it mattersPublishers report 70–80% organic traffic declines on answer-prone topics.
Definition & Foundation
What it is, in plain words
For twenty-five years, search ran on a simple exchange: the engine sent you traffic, and in return you gave it content to index. Generative answers break that exchange. Instead of returning ten links and sending the visitor onward, the engine reads those links itself and hands the user a finished answer. The numbers say it plainly: 68% of US Google searches ended without a click in early 2026 (up from 60% in 2024), and when an AI Overview is present, clicks on the top result drop by roughly 58%.
This is an economic shift, not a headline. The click was the currency that funded the open web; when the answer becomes the destination, that currency deflates: publishers report 70–80% traffic declines on answer-prone topics. But the exposure is uneven. Informational and comparison queries ("what is…", "X vs Y") are absorbed readily, because a paragraph answers them well. Navigational and transactional intent ("acme login", "buy running shoes size 10") still reliably send clicks; nobody buys shoes from a paragraph. Knowing which half of your traffic is exposed is the whole point of this node.

Putting It to Work
Audit your exposure before it audits you
You are not changing a setting; you are changing what you measure and what you promise. "Implementing" this node means finding out how much of your own traffic sits on answer-prone queries, and resetting expectations before the drop surprises anyone.
The exposure-audit playbook
Segment your traffic by intent
Pull your top 200 landing pages and tag each query as informational, comparison, navigational, or transactional. The first two categories are your exposed surface: the traffic most at risk of being absorbed by an answer.
Measure the AI-answer footprint
For your exposed queries, check how often an AI Overview or answer box already appears. AI Overviews now show on more than 20% of Google searches and the share keeps climbing; this is your "how much of my shelf is already gone" number.
Reset the success metric on exposed pages
For answer-prone content, stop promising clicks and start promising citations and brand exposure. A page cited in an AI answer builds authority even when the click never comes, but only if you told leadership that was the goal in advance.
Protect and grow the click-safe surface
Double down where clicks still happen: transactional pages, tools, calculators, community, and original data nobody can synthesize away. This is your traffic insurance.
Communicate the shift early
Write a one-pager for stakeholders explaining why informational traffic will decline even as visibility rises. Getting ahead of the narrative is the difference between "the strategy is working" and "why is traffic down?"

Understanding the shift doesn't earn citations, but it prevents the strategic error of chasing clicks on queries that no longer produce them.
