Citation Tracking
Monitor which prompts cite you, from which source URL, with what sentiment, the GEO equivalent of rank tracking.
- Prompt monitoring
- Citation source URLs
- Sentiment of mentions
Why it mattersYou cannot improve citations you never see happen.
Definition & Foundation
What it is, in plain words
Citation tracking is rank tracking for the answer era: monitoring which prompts cite you, from which source URL, with what sentiment, and how that changes over time. Where SoV gives you the aggregate share, citation tracking gives you the per-citation detail underneath it: the granular record that turns "our visibility dropped" into "we lost the citation on this prompt, which now points at that competitor page instead."
The reason it matters is blunt: you cannot improve citations you never see happen. A citation appears and disappears silently (no alert, no analytics event), so without deliberate tracking you learn about a loss only when the traffic or pipeline dries up quarters later. Tracking three dimensions per citation (which prompt, which source URL, what sentiment) is what makes GEO diagnosable: the source URL tells you whether you were cited via your own page or an off-site surface, and the trend tells you when decay starts, the signal that triggers a refresh before a rival takes the spot for good.
Three Dimensions to Track Per Citation
Prompt, source, sentiment, over time
Prompt monitoring
Track citations against specific prompts and their close variants, on a schedule. This is the "keyword" of GEO; you watch a prompt the way you'd watch a keyword ranking, catching the moment a citation is won or lost.
Source URLs
Record which page the engine cited: your own, a review site, a Reddit thread, a competitor mentioning you. This reveals whether your citations come from your domain or your off-site corpus, which changes where you invest.
Sentiment
A citation can be favorable, neutral, or damaging. Tracking sentiment turns citation monitoring into reputation monitoring; a rise in negative citations is an early warning worth acting on before it shapes the model's picture of you.

Putting It to Work
See every citation, catch every change
The work is a standing observation loop: run your prompts, record the citations and their details, and watch the trend so wins, losses, and decay surface while you can still act on them.
The citation-tracking playbook
Track the prompts from your SoV set
Reuse the representative prompt set behind your Share of Voice so tracking and SoV stay aligned. Add high-value brand and comparison prompts where a lost citation costs real money.
Record prompt, source URL, and sentiment
For each citation, log the three dimensions plus the date. The source URL is the highest-value field; it tells you whether to invest in your own pages or your off-site presence to defend or win the spot.
Watch the trend, not just the snapshot
A single reading is a fact; the trend is the insight. A prompt that cited you last month and doesn't now is your refresh trigger; usually a rival got fresher. Decay is invisible without this time series.
Route findings to the right fix
A lost citation to a fresher rival → refresh. Cited via a competitor's page, not yours → content or off-site gap. Negative sentiment cluster → reputation work. Tracking is only useful if each signal has a destination.
Start manual, automate once it's proven
A spreadsheet and a scheduled hour beats an unproven platform. Run it by hand until the workflow is clear, then consider a tracker from the tool stack, one that exports raw citation data you can re-cut.

What it moves, and how fast
A diagnostic enabler: it earns no citations directly, but it's the only way to catch losses and decay while they're still fixable, turning silent, months-late failures into same-week corrections.
GEO-specific; the closest classic analogue is rank tracking, and the two can share a reporting rhythm.
